I was told by my old work that my fixed-term contract would not be extended beyond its end date (about four months after I went on maternity leave) as there would be no further requirement for my role. I was fine with this…until a former colleague told me three months after my contract had ended that the temp hired as my maternity cover was still there doing the same job! I queried it but they justified it by saying that she is working in a different role, which I’m a seriously sceptical about as former workmates who work closely alongside her were unaware of any change.
It got to the point where I either took it to an official grievance level or dropped it – I chose the latter as I really can’t be doing with the stress, I’d rather enjoy this time with my new baby. Finding out my old employer chose to retain my maternity cover rather than me has really affected my confidence, which is the last thing I need as I’m currently jobhunting. I left work feeling that I’d done a good job (I was always told I had) and was well-liked by my manager and team but this has left me doubting my ability and likeability.
I’m very surprised this has happened – my old manager is a working mum and we worked on a training project that delivered equality and diversity training!
