I considered taking legal action but I was worried about what impact this would have on my career and also if I lost I couldn’t afford to cover legal fees.

I had been with my former employer for 6 years when I got pregnant and was earning a good wage as I’d worked my way up through the pay scale. A colleague who did exactly the same role and joined at the time as me got pregnant after 3 years of being there. She was allowed to return to work part time with a job share after maternity leave. When I requested the same it was turned down. I took it to an internal appeal which I lost. I then decided to hand in my notice as I didn’t want to work full time. I have since found a new part time position but earn £11,000 less as I had to start at the bottom of the pay scale and the new employer does not pay as well. Since then I have found out that another women in the department of my former employer asked for flexible working hours which was turned down but she went on to win her appeal. This experience has had a massive impact on me financially and emotionally. I considered taking legal action but I was worried about what impact this would have on my career and also if I lost I couldn’t afford to cover legal fees.
