I returned to work the next day to find my stuff packed up in a box and was handed my final pay cheque. I was devastated, felt ashamed, embarrassed and extremely stressed

I lost my job at 14 weeks pregnant. My husband lost his job first while in school for electrical apprenticeship and I was the receptionist for the company we worked at. We had struggled for years to conceive due to a congenital condition I suffer from called uterine dyplephious it is an extremely rare condition and I had endometriosis as well. I believe they never thought I would conceive which I never stated to them at all. There was a change in ownership and one of the co owners started working in the office. I was assured by the old owner my job was safe and I was finally able to have some time off without worry as we had two people in the office now. I was extremely sick for the first 12 weeks and had one trip to emergency with fear of miscarriage. There were renovations going on in the office and I was told one day if I was sick I should go home. I returned to work the next day to find my stuff packed up in a box and was handed my final pay cheque. I was devastated, felt ashamed, embarrassed and extremely stressed. I went immediately to the labour board and was informed there wasn’t much they could do for me unfortunately. I wish that they could have held off until my maternity leave to eliminate my job but I guess they didn’t want to wait that long. I could file a human rights complaint against the company but am afraid to do so. I’ve been searching for employment but am unable to find work. I will get sick disability pay but it’s not enough to cover our mortgage or bills. We were not prepared for this at all. We are blessed to have help from our parents and friends. We have friends collecting baby items for us currently which should help a lot. I’m glad to know I’m not alone in this experience and thank you for starting this site 😊
