”if you hadn’t been on maternity leave you would have been promoted as well”

When I returned to work I discovered a colleague the same positions me (a male) had just been promoted. During my return to work catch up with my boss, he said “if you hadn’t been on maternity leave you would have been promoted as well, you would have actually been my preference over Joe Bloggs, but of course you were off”.

I had a good relationship with my boss and I said to him, do you realise what you just said? You shouldn’t be saying things like that even if they are true!

He promised that I would promoted within 6 months (which I was).  I decided not to take it any further as I knew that ‘causing a fuss’ would make a bad name for myself within the company and I was going to look for a new job anyway.  It’s terrible that we experience this discrimination and then don’t feel we can even speak out about it!

Its great to be able to shared on this site, thank you.
