I fell pregnant with my son in December 2010, I was in my early twenties and unmarried. When I told my employer, she asked me if I had considered an abortion! When I raised this with HR I was told that “it’s just the way she is”.
Throughout my pregnancy my employer made it difficult for me to attend antenatal appointments and was thoroughly unsupportive. My repeated attempts to seek help from HR left me up against a brick wall. I was told I was not allowed to apply for a promotion that arose as I “would be going on maternity leave soon anyway”.
I had to take early maternity leave as my son was born prematurely. Whilst on maternity leave I was made redundant. I am sure that if I hadn’t had a baby then I would have kept my job as all of my colleagues did!
