So many women still do not get to those senior levels, as they are held back by the challenges they face when they return to work after Maternity Leave

Having worked in HR for 15 years in City Finance institutions, I realised that so many organisations do nothing to help support women through Maternity Leave and the ones that do often only provide ‘maternity coaches’ for those women already at a very senior level. I saw how badly so many organisations treat women during and when they return from Maternity Leave. The amount of times women were either demoted, but in a subtle way so they couldn’t easily take legal action, or discriminated against just for being a mother and having to leave the office earlier or do more flexible hours, was shocking. I would often have managers actually saying to me how ‘inconvenient’ it was when one of their team went on Maternity Leave and asking if there was any way of recruiting someone new and ‘removing’ her from their team to avoid any disruption to business as usual. I set up Maternity Matters when I went on mat leave when I had my son. We offer  (independent of any organisations) affordable classes and coaching for women, independent from their organisation and teach them to manage their Maternity Leave ‘like a project’ with a strategy. It means ‘everyday’ women on normal salaries can afford to have coaching and support through the maternity process and therefore hopefully sustain their careers more easily and actually therefore still have the chance to still get to those more senior roles, better equipped to deal with the challenges which come with balancing motherhood and a career.
