I worked for a large well respected corporate company. During my first maternity leave I applied to change my working hours to fit around being able to collect my son from nursery. My employer made this process a nightmare. On return to work I was given all the low level jobs and my male bosses attitude had completely changed toward me. He didn’t speak to me most of the time. I felt in constant fear that I was to lose my job.
During my second maternity leave at the same company I was made redundant (only one out of 1000’s who worked there). I fought this through to tribunal stage, but this was the most stressful time of my life. Having to juggle a baby, a toddler and my lawyer! It also cost me £1,000 just to get to the tribunal. I luckily got a decent settlement before the tribunal occurred.
The next company I worked for again made me feel bad for working part time even though this was agreed at the outset. I was also given low level jobs compared to my male counterparts. I therefore left this workplace and am now a full time mum. What was the point of getting good qualifications, going to University and becoming professionally qualified for?! Sexism is still rife and will continue to be whilst so many managers are male.
