I have just watched the programme about kids and careers and your website was mentioned. I had an overwhelming urge to write. My story is different as it comes from the other end of pregnancy and babies. But I believe that the work place as a whole for any mum with any aged child is an issue. I am 40 this year. I have spent the last 20 years in part time work so I could care for my two children myself. My eldest child is now 20 but my son is still at school, aged 14. I went full time this year however, I need to do the morning school run as we moved from walking distance and my employer has made me feel uncomfortable with altering my hours. There have been times when I have had to take time off due to my child being ill or having to come out of work if the school has rung me to say my child is unwell. Although I have not been stopped by my employer there has always been a meeting or return to work discussion about my attendance? I am made to feel very uncomfortable and feel like a naughty school girl myself. The point I’m trying to make on your site is regardless if your pregnant or have a brand new baby these issues continue when your children are much older. It’s a very tough place to juggle being a mum and having a job.
I spend most of my time wishing I could afford to have stayed part time.
