I was refused life cover because I’m pregnant

My husband and I are currently obtaining additional borrowing for an extension to our home. We have to increase our life and critical illness cover to match the new level of borrowing. Had a call with the mortgage provider this morning. I was refused both life and critical illness cover because I have gestational diabetes (a condition which will disappear almost immediately after giving birth in 99% of cases) and am taking aspirin to prevent pregnancy related high blood pressure (my blood pressure is currently normal – I have to check it twice a week). My husband was offered both life and critical illness cover despite the fact he is 8 years older than me, and other than the pregnancy-related conditions we gave the same answer to all other lifestyle and health questions. So, essentially I’ve been refused important financial products (I will need additional life cover to obtain the new borrowing) simply because I’m pregnant.
