PTS Scotland hosts first ever Early Learning and Childcare Hustings

On Friday 10th April 2026, Pregnant Then Screwed Scotland hosted their first ever Early Learning and Childcare Hustings ahead of the Scottish Parliament Election on 7th May.

With support from Inspiring Scotland, we brought parents, academics, and other third sector organisations together to question candidates from the main political parties in Scotland on the future of childcare.

Co-hosted by The Centre for Public Policy at the University of Glasgow, the hustings was chaired by Professor Kezia Dugdale: Associate Director of the Centre for Public Policy, and former Scottish Labour Leader.

With representation from the main political parties in Scotland, the panel included:

  • Kaukab Stewart for the SNP, standing in Glasgow Southside (Minister for Equalities),

  • Meghan Gallacher for the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, standing in Uddingston and Bellshill (Party Spokesperson on Housing);

  • Vonnie Sandlan for the Scottish Labour Party, standing in Glasgow Central,

  • Willie Rennie for the Scottish Liberal Democrats, standing in Fife North East (Party Spokesperson on Education, Economy & Communities),

  • Holly Bruce for the Scottish Green Party, standing in Glasgow Southside (Councillor in Glasgow City Council for Langside) and

  • Graham Simpson for Reform UK in Scotland, standing in Airdrie.

Led by questions from the audience and parents online, candidates outlined their plans for the future of childcare in Scotland. Topics ranged from the expansion of funded childcare, to voucher schemes, and the unique struggles of single parent families and families with children who have additional support needs.

Missed out on the day? No need to worry, you can catch up on the livestream below!

If one thing was clear from the hustings: childcare is rising up the agenda in mainstream politics in Scotland.

Thank you to everyone who tuned in, came along, asked questions, and helped make this possible.
