The Interim Amos Report is a wake‑up call but it should not come as a surprise.

For years, mums, families, and NHS staff have been telling us the same story: unsafe care, voices ignored, discrimination unchecked, and basic standards breached. Nearly 750 recommendations have been made over the past decade. Yet change has been too slow, and too many families have paid the price.

This report is sobering. It is triggering. And it is devastating. But it is not unknown. We knew this. Families knew this. Midwives knew this. The fact that it takes yet another investigation to confirm what has been shouted from the rooftops speaks volumes about a system that has failed to listen.

Let us be clear: this is not about blaming midwives. They are working under impossible conditions, carrying moral injury, and still striving to deliver compassionate care. The blame lies with a system that has ignored mums, under‑resourced staff, and tolerated inequality.

What must change

• Listen to mums and families – their voices must shape care and accountability.
• Tackle inequality and discrimination – no more excuses for unequal outcomes.
• Transparent reporting – families deserve honesty, not redacted notes or delayed answers.
• National oversight – trusts cannot keep “marking their own homework.”

What comes next

The government has promised an 8‑week Call for Evidence in January 2026, initial findings in February, and a National Maternity & Neonatal Taskforce to oversee reforms. Final recommendations are due in Spring 2026.
